Claymore

— Charlottesville, Virginia —

ARRANGED AMONG MATURE TREES on a plateau overlooking a meadow, the buildings that compose this new 180-acre farm include a main house, a guest house, a barn, and a garden shed. Inspired by the local vernacular, all the structures are wood framed with white clapboard siding. Their foundations and chimneys are red brick and the steep standing seam tin roofs are likewise painted an iconic red.

The interior of the main house is anchored by the living and dining area, an expansive single room with a high ceiling and clerestory windows bookended by a pair of fireplaces. This central space and its tall roof form establish hierarchy and order to the ensemble of structures, which are sited for optimal connection between one another and to the surrounding landscape. Windows, French doors, porches, and terraces offer a variety of pleasant vantage points from which to appreciate the bucolic Virginia Piedmont setting.
