Our client grew up in this eclectic home with elements of Victorian, farmhouse and vernacular details from the turn of the century. Fond childhood memories led the client to seek to renovate the somewhat cramped layout of the existing 1913 house and dated, earlier addition to accommodate modern life. Over time, the home’s rural site has grown into a leafy suburban neighborhood convenient to DC and Tysons Corner, VA.
After removing the earlier addition, we connected a new addition with a gracious, light-filled stairway and windowed gallery off a new side street entryway. The addition beyond contains the Kitchen & Family Room—a single, uninterrupted space with light on four sides—terminated with an elevated three-sided screened porch overlooking the large yard below. A sunny playroom and convenient Mudroom and Pantry lead via a back porch to the new detached garage with suite above, designed to maximize usage of the site’s zoning.
The Entry/Stair also lead to a bright second floor landing with built-in window seat and bookcases that serves both for family gathering and convenient circulation between the existing and addition areas and first floor.
